Some of our most cherished phrases here at SJI carry a timeless quality that resonates across generations . Pray and Work — a simple yet profound motto — reminds us of the harmony between reflection and action . It speaks to a thoughtful and sustained attitude of relying on God while engaging with the practical realities of life .

In these words , we find a meeting place where the spiritual and the everyday intertwine , inspiring us to approach our tasks with purpose and faith . In this edition of Lumen , we reflect on another enduring phrase : Men and Women for Others . The preposition “ for ” signals purpose — a calling to live beyond ourselves . How much of our daily lives is truly lived for others ? When we speak , is it to uplift and support ? When we choose silence , is it out of consideration for others ? And when we act , do we aim to contribute to the greater good ?
This issue celebrates the incredible ways our SJI community has extended themselves for others . From meaningful work in the local community to far-reaching efforts in the wider community , we share inspiring stories of compassion and connection .
One particularly touching example comes from our VIA project , Building Community Champions . As one of our migrant brothers expressed , “ Today I feel like a Singaporean .” Small gestures can have a profound impact , making someone feel seen , valued , and included .
May these stories inspire us all to live our lives with purpose and with a heart for others . At SJI , ‘ others ’ are often described as the Last , the Lost , and the Least . Reaching out to them is not just an act of service — it is a way to empower , to uplift and to help them realise their full potential . By extending a helping hand , we also grow in compassion , understanding and a deeper sense of purpose ourselves .
Happy reading !
