“ My assigned organisation was NUS College of Design and Engineering , in the Materials Science faculty . During our WEP , we were exposed to research work and how to operate in a lab . Our supervisor ‘ s project was on using light therapy to help with skin cancer treatment . We were taught how to solder under a microscope as the components were extremely small .
Next , our supervisor also taught us how to use a resin printer and how to cure the prints using UV light . The prints were moulds for silicon . The silicon shapes were used to hold the circuit boards to the patient ‘ s arm . Silicon was chosen as it is flexible enough to fit the curved surfaces of the human body .
To make the silicon , we had to accurately measure out two equal portions of the two components , then mix them . Next , we had to place them in a vacuum chamber to remove all the air trapped in the silicon mixture before pouring it into the moulds . The moulds were then left to cure under weights in an oven for a day .
Our WEP was enriching and exposed us to what higher learning may entail and how to work in a lab safely . The 2 weeks also allowed us to explore NUS and see what a university campus is like . This helped us have a better understanding of our future ”
