Philosopher George Santayana once wrote in “ The Philosophy of Travel ” that “ what is life but a form of motion and journey through a foreign world ?” On this reflective note , the resumption of international travel in 2023 brought along the long-anticipated overseas school travel . Not only did SJI host numerous visits and student exchanges from our overseas partner schools , but our Josephians explored diverse cultures firsthand , fostering a profound understanding of the interconnected world through the Year 3 International Experience ( IE ) and Year 5 Global Education Programme ( GEP ).
This year , LUMEN highlights SJI ’ s 2024 theme of Deepening our Connections with the World , Industry and Community . This issue of LUMEN delves into the global aspect of learning beyond borders , while the December issue will focus on industry and community .
In this internationally-focused issue , readers will find reflections from teachers and students on trips learning beyond the classroom in major cities across SouthEast Asia . In Bangkok for instance , students performed their service learning at Wat Bann Po Ta Wan Tok School and played competitive sports ( football no less ) with their Thai peers from Suphanburi Sports School ( we won !). Further afield in Taiwan , SJI students brushed up their Chinese speaking skills as they attended Home Economics and 3D-modelling classes with newfound friends at National Tainan Second Senior High School . For the more athletic and robust , our other intrepid students strenuously hiked up the mountains of Sapa 1500m above sea level and stayed in traditional Vietnamese homes .
Through their stories , you will discover the diverse landscapes , traditions , and lifestyles that make each of these destinations unique . From exploring serene elephant sanctuaries and indulging in local cuisines ( The Pad Thai recipe in the Chiang Mai section has all the right combination of sugar , tamarind and soy sauces , and is a must try !) to engaging with communities and understanding different ways of life , these trips have broadened our students ’ perspectives and deepened their appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our world .
In the midst of 2024 , we hope their experiences inspire you to embark on your own adventures and explore the wonders that South East Asia has to offer .
Happy reading !
