After graduating from NCC AIR during the Annual Parade in April 2023 , Liyu Jiong Yang participated in the Singapore Youth Flying Club ’ s Introduction to Flight Training ( SWIFT ) Course 2023 .
Throughout the 3-day course , the participants delved deeper into the understanding of the plane they would be operating , familiarising themselves with the flight instruments and controls , and practised essential skills such as radiotelephony , flight departure and rejoin procedures . The participants had the privilege of piloting the Diamond DA40-CS , a light , four-seat propeller plane , on the sophisticated Flight Training Device ( FTD ). The FTD is a state-of-theart , realistic flight simulator complete with a replica cockpit equipped with the same exact avionics and instruments , surrounded by a 180 ° curved screen .
The only perceptible difference from the real flight experience was the stationary cockpit , as every other aspect aimed to faithfully replicate the genuine experience of piloting .
The course deepened Jiong Yang ’ s understanding and interest in aviation and a newfound passion for him to become a pilot has grown : “ SYFC introduced me to the boundless world of flying and the potential paths that I could explore , including the prospect of joining the RSAF . It was certainly one of my best experiences since joining NCC AIR in Year 1 and I extend my gratitude to Mr Mok Hsu Pan , as well as the dedicated staff at SYFC , particularly Mr Koh , the CCA Manager , and Mr Chua , the FTD Instructor , for their invaluable support and guidance .”
