MEET OUR NEW TEACHERS WHO VALUE THEIR FREEDOM | LUMEN
While many of you will know Ms Michelle Kuah as a huge fan of the periodic table , she actually derives even more pleasure from the tennis court . Without any hesitation , she identifies this space as the one in which she feels most free . The Chemistry and TOK teacher explains , ‘ For me , tennis has been a constant . Playing from a young age , it has been with me through many changing seasons of my life .’ However , the sport did not always provide feelings of liberation , ‘ When I began playing , I used to pray for rain and hope that training would be cancelled .’ It is a very different story now though . ‘ I never feel freer than when I am on court . At the same time , tennis gives me so much more ! I ’ ve just moved out of my parents ’ home , so tennis with my family is an activity that I cherish now more than ever - a way to spend time with my parents and siblings .’ For Michelle , the sense of freedom comes from a lack of coercion ; the opportunity to choose to spend time with loved ones now she no longer lives at home . Paradoxically , now she is free to do as she wishes in her free time , she chooses to play the sport she once tried desperately to avoid playing .
