LANGUAGE EDUCATION THROUGH BILITERACY AND BILINGUALISM | LUMEN 29
Mdm . Fauziah Hanom in the interview shoot with Sim Khok Yee of FN602 , stressed about beliefs and values defining the art form - Malay dance .
The students had to the opportunity to interview important luminaries in the Malay music community like the late Mdm . Fadilah Othman on the art form - Hadrah .
Malay language speakers to synthesise their findings , ( iii ) exploring solutions – as part of a workshop exercise - to craft effective subtitles in English without losing both literal and inferred meaning conveyed in Malay , taught the team how translation is not limited to language use . Through this project , students understood how translation is about harnessing language ; to allow one to step into the shoes of another to experience something that can never be measured – emotions . When Mdm Fauziah Hanom in the interview shoot stressed she would like to conduct this interview in English , project participants learnt from her in a later session how she wanted to use English so that Singaporeans can experience , through her choice of words , the beliefs and values defining the art form she has nurtured and cherished all these years . Therein , ( once again ) lies the importance of public pedagogy and intangible cultural documentation . The value of knowledge lies in the betterment of society . What better way than to celebrate the heritage practices of all communities and make them our own too ?
The ability to educate members of the public about a nation ’ s heritage is both an art and a science . The team is privileged to have this opportunity to collaborate with MHC on this project , which concluded on 28 October .
