Since 2020 , with the onset of Covid-19 in Singapore , the last two years have seen a number of CAS groups that collaborate with and meet the needs of external agencies go on a hiatus . With the Safe Management Measures ( SMM ) being calibrated at different points of the year depending on the Covid situation , it became even more challenging for the Year 5 and 6 students to fulfil their service requirements .
A large majority of our students however remain undaunted . Every time an appeal was made for volunteers on Managebac especially for Lakeside Family Services ’ ( LFS ) various projects , the quota of students required would always be fulfilled , before a project could even begin . One such project was packing the belongings of a family whose flat was due for an upgrading . Once the appeal was made in April 2021 , a group of students , consisting of Sashank Balasubramaniam ( ML512 ), Ryan Ng ( LE509 ), Lam Yan Yu ( MN 517 ), Colin Toh ( MN516 ), David Joshua Ho Chih Hsien ( ML514 ), Wesley Yiap ( MN519 ), Lee Jing Ching ( ML512 ) and Brandan Nicholas Bolte ( FN502 ), rose to the challenge . Cindy Gan , LFS Volunteer Management Executive , applauded their efforts and commented that she and her colleague ‘ were very impressed by some of the students who
made multiple trips ( there was a restriction on visitor numbers per household due to Covid ) to the client ’ s flat . She also added that the students had exceeded ‘ their expectations in helping the client finish the packing in such a short span of time .’ Group coordinator Sashan recounted that besides packing , some of them also made the time to entertain the client ’ s young daughter .
Another partnership with LFS was providing online tuition for both primary and secondary school students . It was heartening to note again that there was no shortage of volunteers when an appeal was made . Vu Tra My ( LE509 ) reflected on her experience of tutoring her secondary 2 mentee , “ I am now able to see things from her point of view , to put her needs before mine , and to always be caring and considerate so that she can have the most comfortable learning environment possible .” Another volunteer , Koon Wei Pheng ( LE507 ) proactively arranged for a face-to-face tuition with his primary one mentee on his own accord although there was no necessity to do so .
