22 LUMEN | INTERVIEW
Au Revoir Mr Jeremy Liew
By Kelvin Seet and Nevina Ho
At the end of 2020 when Mr Jeremy Liew retires , he would have seen 26 cohorts of students pass through the portals of SJI . To those students he might have been their Form tutor , Geography or Social Studies teacher , Head of Level or even Prefect Master . No matter what his designation might have been , he would first and foremost be their educator , not just one to impart subject-based content and skills , but someone who readily shared his life experiences and insights to bring growth to his students and to challenge them to be better .
Having joined SJI in 1994 , Jeremy , an SJI alumnus , held many appointments over the past 26 years . From 2003 to 2007 , he was Head of Level , and in the following 2 years , he was able to mentor new HOLs as Senior Head of Level . These years accorded him the opportunity to interact closely with his students and see to their well-being through programmes
he and others crafted , fine-tuned and carried out .
His students often echoed unanimously that they have learnt a lot from him both in and out of the classroom and through the conversations that they had – many probably can ’ t remember all the Geography concepts he taught them but they certainly remember him as a teacher of life and principles .
