7 stand tall as a team . Moreover , “ Even if one does not make it to the first team , as a reserve he has the mindset of being competition-ready . Should anyone from the first team be injured or taken ill , the reserves are prepared to compete when called upon ,” said Reuven Cheng ( 334 ), the incoming Captain of the ‘ B ’ Division .
Despite the many hours spent and the fact that the national competitions are close to the mid-year exams in school , the canoeists have coped and excelled in their academics as well . The discipline and determination they possess when they train seem to be applied to other areas of their life as well .
In 2010 , a top scorer at the ‘ O ’ levels at both school and national level was canoeist Daniel Neubronner Robert ( 431 ) with 9 distinctions . Another outstanding canoeist Peter Chen-Yang Nikhil Daniel ( 431 ) not only excelled academically but was also one of the worthy recipients of the Lasallian Distinguished Service Award at the Speech and Graduation Day 2011 .
Canoeing in SJI has gained more followers in recent years . More schools are also participating at the annual National Inter-Schools Championships now . The National Inter-Schools Championship consists of three classes of events over two distances , 500m or 1000m . Besides participating in this competition , the SJI team also competes in the annual National Schools Dragon Boat Championships organized by the Singapore Dragon Boat Association . This is another event eagerly awaited by the boys to demonstrate the strengths of their team-effort and solidarity .
Belonging to the Canoeing Team is an honor for the boys who have learned to cherish their time over the years and this is reflected in their support for each other during training and competitions . Indubitably , Canoeing is one CCA the members will persevere to emulate the successes of their predecessors for many more years to come .
