When the coronavirus began sweeping quietly but swiftly across the world at the start of 2020 , no one expected that this unknown virus would soon turn into a global pandemic that will upend societies , redefine our way of life , send countries into lockdowns , as well as trigger recessions and massive job losses for the months to come . The healthcare and frontline workers in Singapore were put to the test as the number of imported COVID-19 cases started increasing locally .

Education systems were not spared from the repercussions of the pandemic , with many schools around the world being forced to shut down for weeks and months when infected cases soared in each country . Since the end of January 2020 , the Ministry of Education ( MOE ) Singapore began implementing precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and educators . Co-curricular activities , lessons in large groups and mass assemblies soon came to a sudden halt . In April , all schools in Singapore began trialling Home-Based Learning ( HBL ) to prepare students and educators for a new way of learning and teaching . Despite being thrown into the deep end , everyone embraced the need for change with great mettle as we dived right into Full HBL mode from 8 April when the nation went into a lockdown during the Circuit Breaker period .
In this issue , we celebrate our Lasallian educators and young Josephians who have inspired us with their resilience and fortitude in the face of challenges and unending changes . We also salute those who stepped out of their comfort zone to become men and women for others during this unprecedented time . This issue is dedicated to all the frontline workers and the unsung heroes who have been holding the fort to keep us safe amidst the COVID-19 pandemic . You ’ re in our prayers ! We hope you enjoy this issue of Lumen . Ora et Labora !
