15 sparked the interest amongst the students in reading Chinese books and some students were keen to read the books that were shared .”
Ms Fauziah Abdullah , a Malay Language teacher , shared that “ Book Week is a very valuable platform to cultivate positive reading habits and to allow for exposure to Malay books , especially in this digital age which has affected how much time our students spent reading , especially so for the Malay language .”
Jayden Heng ( LE202 ) commented during the Chinese Language Readathon that he picked up a few new Chinese words as well as interesting facts about how carnivorous plants catch their prey . This event has inspired him to read more Chinese non-fiction books .
Future Food Bites What do you think food will be like in the future ? With ingenuity , our Parent Support Group ( PSG ) transformed the Founder ’ s Hall into a food street with interesting food bites , posters and banners - ready to educate our young about future food . “ Seeing the large crowd sampling the food allayed my worry of poor attendance and attested to the success of the event . It has been my greatest joy and satisfaction when the students enquired about the recipes and asked for second helpings . The hard work was definitely worth it !” remarked Ms Yuna Durairah A . Rahman , Logistics in-charge for SJI PSG 2019 .
In Know-your-food Quiz , Sheng Han ( TG618 ) thought “ food should not change much in the future as it did not in the past few centuries . Instead , there will be areas of improvements and hopefully many new inventions in terms of the fusion of food . The food we eat actually represents a culture and a convention in our society . With globalization , I believe there will be more and more hybrid food from different cultures such as chilli crab prata , beef steak sushi .”
Talks What is Book Week without book talks ? This year , we are very fortunate to have Mr Felix Cheong , an accomplished writer and former Josephian , to share with us his works on Speculative Fiction and Ms AnnGee Neo , a budding Illustrator to share with us her works . Our Librarian , Mr Andrew Koh , took to the stage and had a rock-n-roll session with our Year Two students on Macbeth . Mrs Boey Wah Fong , Teacher-Librarian , shared on the topic of Picture books for all ages while Brother-President , Brother Paul Ho , shared his thoughts and views on the book , ‘ The Power and the Glory ’ by Graham Greene . It is perhaps most fitting for the talk as he explored issues about life in a time when SJI celebrates the Tercentenary . What does the future hold for Catholic schools in Singapore and the world ?
David Yeong ( LE203 ) quipped , “ We have to come to the realization that writing these kinds of stories ( i . e Speculative fiction ) will help us become more creative and innovative people . We can inculcate the habit of constructing bizarre ideas that could actually help us advance in many areas in the future and this could be key for the growth of our future generation .”
After listening to Ms AnnGee Neo ’ s talk , Penaredondo Josh Emmanuel Momo ( ML102 ) shared , “ I personally think that she has changed the impression many students had of illustration and maybe even inspire them to become illustrators too .”
“ We will , we will , rock you ” While the students chanted these words , they also learnt a few tips about rhythm and diction in Macbeth . Raphael Goh ( LE203 ) revealed , “ From Mr Koh ’ s informative and fun talk , everyone learned a few words in Old English , Shakespeare ’ s use of

Competitions
“
Josephians were invited to take part in competitions to pit their wit against one another . The Book Face competition tests the participants ’ creativity when it comes to angling a perfect shot that mixes a book cover with reality , creating a single united picture . The Know-your-food passages competition tests if you can live up to the name of a “ book worm ”. The participants were given a short abstract from a book and had to guess which book it belonged to . Last but not least was the Read-aloud competition where participants had to choose a story which best fits their interpretation of the theme ‘ Gardens of Tomorrow ’ and have it recorded .
As the event drew to a close , reading does not stop . Book Week started five years ago in 2015 and to date , it has continued in its mission of celebrating the joys of reading in the Josephian community . This year , the theme was coined by a former teacher , Mrs Beryl Ang , who is an avid reader . We hope that we have inspired more students to enjoy reading through this event .
