The presence of SJI in Singapore ’ s educational landscape was only possible due to the De La Salle Brothers . Had Father Jean-Marie Beurel not have the vision of setting up a school in Singapore 165 years ago , SJI would not have existed . He was a man with a vision and one who remained undaunted by setbacks . We owe it to him and many De La Salle Brothers who came after him for the gift of SJI .

Likewise , many of the stories in this issue of Lumen feature people who had overcome obstacles to realise their dreams and made things happen . Team Chaleur from the senior section of SJI emerged global champions in the Social Innovation Relay 2017 . The inaugural TedX Youth @ SJI would not have taken place , had Nguyen Huu Thinh not envisioned its possibility . Gymnast Zac Liew persevered since he was five years old to achieve not only a first-ever boys ’ team gymnastics gold , but also the Silver Medal in the individual category for all-round excellent performance in the ASEAN Games . Profoundly deaf Dr Joseph Heng pursues his medical dream . The endeavour undertaken by the JC 1s brought
art alive to the walls in SJI . These are but a sampling of what to expect in this issue .
May this gift of Lumen be one of pleasant surprises for you as you unravel its wrapping . Just as Jesus is God ’ s gift to the world this Christmastide , let us celebrate Him and also the blessing of 165 years of legacy that the De La Salle Brothers have left us with and wants us to continue .
Wishing you and your loved ones , a peaceful and joyous Christmas .
Ora et Labora .
