and strictly defined manner . He should not be judged by that alone ( if at all ), and he does not want to be .
If being a linguistics undergraduate were a job , it would definitely be his dream job . Kevin loves what he is studying about languages and how language works , and he hopes to be able to continue exploring these issues even as he aspires to become an English teacher in the near future . His most fulfilling achievements to date are : the linguistics magazine he started with a couple of friends in NUS , Unravel ( unravellingmag . com ) and the novel he wrote for Epigram Books ’ inaugural Fiction Prize . He also enjoys the research he is doing into Kristang , the little-known and dying language of the Portuguese Eurasian community .
Lim Bo Zhi ( Class of 2012 )
After leaving SJI , Bo Zhi - SJI ’ s own ‘ comeback kid ’ who defied the odds stacked against him - enrolled in Singapore Polytechnic ( SP ) in Computing Engineering . Even though he is no longer in SJI , he continues to carry the Josephian spirit with him and perseveres in SP . There were some tough moments that he encountered in SP but he has since managed to overcome them . Amidst the struggles , Bo Zhi has continually achieved stellar results , maintaining a Grade Point Average ( GPA ) of 3.96 , with the highest GPA that he has ever attained being a 4 . In his second year , Bo Zhi was awarded an A * STAR scholarship .
Bo Zhi says , “ I will never forget all that the SJI community has done for me . I still go back to SJI to visit the teachers and staff who always gave me moral support when I stumbled in my life , especially Ms Christina Tang .” Bo Zhi ’ s aspirations after completing his studies in SP will be to pursue a course in the IT field in either Nanyang Technological University or apply for a scholarship for an overseas university . Bo Zhi adds , “ Wherever I go , I will always uphold the Lasallian values that SJI has instilled in me over my years as a Josephian .”
Tan Ser Yung ( Class of 2012 )
Ser Yung , the Judoka who was left in a coma for over two months after being injured in a judo competition in 2010 , went on to pursue a Diploma in Social Science in Nanyang Polytechnic ( NYP ) after graduating from SJI . In 2013 , he became the proud recipient of the Daisy Phay NYP Foundation Scholarship which is awarded to students who are performing well and have a passion to serve the disadvantaged . Now in his final year , Ser Yung has been meaningfully engaged in many things and performing a musical ‘ The Prison Within ’ for an audience of 1,200 was one of them . Such is Ser Yung ’ s joie de vivre .
His passion for writing has led Ser Yung to join The Write Stuffs to cover events , profiling extraordinary individuals and submit personal reflections on the NYP blog . Ser Yung attributes his strong foundation in English and writing to SJI . Having returned to SJI on several occasions to share about his journey and encourage his fellow Lasallians is Ser Yung ’ s way of paying it forward . Ultimately , Ser Yung acknowledges the hand of the Almighty on him as he reflects : “ God ’ s fingerprints had been apparent in my life all this while .”
