But when this was burned down during the moro raid in 1616, the Jesuits transferred their mission center and residencia to Katbalaugan, the ancient name of Catbalogan. From that residencia, they established mission sites or visitas in the villages of Cotay, Cawayan( forerunner of Zumarraga), Canahawan( Canhawan, still a barangay of Catbalogan), out of which a pueblo was created. Because it was the Jesuit residencia, the political officialdom thought it convenient to make it into the cabecera or capital of the island province of Samar. 7
