Episode 02 Collection International January 2014 / S.He-ART / Susannah Kelly / Masks I came to realize later that what propelled me forward was and continues to be a seeking spirit. There just had to be deeper meaning, something of worth to keep me here…continuing to live and work to the best of my ability. In 1997 I was introduced to Nichiren Buddhism. USA And so, through this practice, many of my unresolved issues began to resolve themselves. After deciding to give it a go, I eventually became (and still am) a devoted member of a lay organization, SGI, which supports me in continuing my day-to-day prayers and faith. Faith. This word alone defines my existence. It is by faith that I find the richer answers, the more soothing solutions, and the extraordinary progress as an artist. It is by faith and the relationships I now form that these current works, my masks, can be completed. About the Masks: I wanted to test myself and see if I could produce masks without any training or specific influence. I also wanted to communicate this “royal unseen” universe through the medium of the mask. Forming a bridge between the recognizable (a face) and the mystical.
