seem a plain choice, but this is how we are able to express ourselves best, we show movie clips and animations on a very large surface, so as to involve all the participants as much as possible. There is also an important detail that must not be left out: the Transmission starts in Prague and reaches various countries worldwide, so when we design the stage we must consider the limits that there could be in the other locations, in order to avoid structural problems when setting up the stage. The theme must also be chosen with care. The Transmission is remembered also because of the massive use of very powerful lasers, a technical solution with a great impact on the participants. How was this choice born? Lasers surely provide a great opportunity for a show to be remembered. When designing the lighting I always try to bear in mind how to exploit each component that I have available – traditional spotlights, lasers, videos, fireworks… – to create a greater participation of the spectators in the show. Actually the lasers we use for Transmission are not as numerous as in other events, but the fact that they are positioned directly in front of the public, without anything else in front, creates an explosive effect that makes them seem even more powerful. Furthermore, I believe the O2 Arena where the Transmission is held is the best location to organize events of this type because of the very high ceiling which allows us to build a very large stage (45m wide and 23m high). From the tribunes and from the floor there is an excellent view, and there is space for everyone, without any overcrowding. In the emails we exchanged in order to organize this interview, you mentioned the fact that the Transmission production is different from the SPECIFICHE TECNICHE / TECHNICAL INFO Dimensioni del palco / Stage dimension: 45m x 23m (larghezza x altezza / width x height) 100 LUCE 324 / SHOW TIME production of other festivals. Why? I think that, as I already mentioned, the team work that characterizes this festival represents a great added value for the production. Surely I am personally involved in planning the design and transforming it into a concrete project, but the cues I receive from the other members of the team are fundamental, because they increase the level of participation of all in the creative process, because each contribution is an input that I take into consideration in the planning phase. In the last edition of the Transmission, there were numerous lines of lights and videos that reached right up to the top of the ceiling of the stage: this solution is the fruit of the great cooperative work of the various departments, and this is the reason why at the end of every production all the technicians are pleased with the results obtained. How is the work-flow for the creation of the Transmission concept organized? Generally, the initial idea comes from the Vision Impossible team. All those involved in the deciding process attend a brainstorming session so that each one can contribute to the layout of the first draft. Starting from this, we decide how to produce the video and the first version of the storyline is prepared. The next step, where I am directly involved, regards the integration of the video with the lasers and the entire lighting system that is available, in order to obtain a final result that is really explosive. I work exclusively with project rendering software so that also the other figures in the production can follow the work in progress, step by step. This great work leads to the production of real stories that are told during the event in the intervals between one DJ set and the next. The structure of Transmission includes the presence of an introduction video for each DJ (generally they are eight) and a special movie clip, shown in the heart of the evening with no one on the stage, where the story that gives its name to the edition of the festival is celebrated. These particular moments are prepared with topmost attention: during the rehearsals, the video is synchronized with the lights and the fireworks in order to increase the show effects, and when it is launched it is managed directly by the control console with no live interventions. For the rest of the evening, our operators carry out a fantastic job choosing which lights to use and when. The team has been working together since over ten years and is made up of professionals who know each other and know the music genre that is played at Transmission well. The lasers are managed by Ministry, a Slovakian company, the LED wall by Vision Impossible, a Dutch company, and all the lights are controlled by my group, Pinata, which is from the The Netherlands The team in front of the stage comes from three different nationalities and even though it may seem difficult to communicate with each other, especially during the show when the volume is very high, we know each other so well we are able to foresee our colleagues’ moves. Nothing is taken for granted and I feel this also has positive effects on the public, who recognizes the hard work and effort. Are there other artistic and technical elements you would like to introduce in order to increase the level of the show? Do you have a particular project planned for the future? We have been thinking of exploiting holograms in the festival production since about five years. I believe they are a very interesting instrument and also the rest of the team likes them. However, they require a very costly technology, especially if we need a high quality level. Furthermore, we would only be able to use them in the Prague edition, and not in the tour around the world. An option that we may consider in the future editions is the introduction of moving scenic elements, that can be managed from the controls console. Also in this case there are limits tied to budget, and in the designing stage some choices will have to be made to decide which components to use and how many. With regard to the future, Transmission will maintain its identity. The experience we have gained during the course of the years has enabled us to create a product that is well known and easy to identify both from a technical and an artistic standpoint. Our aim is to offer a show that is always new and unique, also for those who have participated in the previous editions. 76x Atomic Strobo 3000 58x SGM sixpack 44x Blinder 4 40x LED par 22x Laser full color + 2x Green + 18x Red Schermi LED / LED screens: 280m2 (P3.9 + P6.6) + 300m2 LED circle TRANSMISSION NEL MONDO / AROUND THE WORLD 11/07/2018 – Transmission at Airbeat One Festival, Germany 27/10/2018 – Transmission Prague, Czech Republic
