the Federal Chancellery, Frank and Schultes,
proposed an open, flowing construction
described as: “A space like a river – from the
forum across the Cour d’Honneur
into the foyer, through the garden, across
the river Spree towards the park”. The new seat
of government in Berlin was to be oriented
to the outside world – a fluid building whose
interior opens to intentionally afford transparent
views. The creative intent to celebrate the
architecture whilst minimizing the visibility
of lighting equipment was inhibited by the
curved concrete’s complex mounting conditions.
Meanwhile, the vision to produce a transparent
façade appeared to be crowded by the heavy
concrete columns. To solve these disparities,
we closely worked with the architects to ensure
the artificial illumination became an integral
component of the architecture. Based on Karl
Friedrich Schinkel’s stage design for the arrival
of the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic flute,
the effect of the prominent curved ceilings
is reminiscent of a starry sky.
Any suggestions for a young lighting designer?
I attach great importance to both the mediation
of fundamental design tools of the trade
as well as its method. Systematically developing
a design, delving into the architecture, truly
understanding it – all of this is crucial to me.
Furthermore, I think that practical experience
is necessary, and I often use projects as
examples. My advice to the next generation?
Well, apart from the creative drive, profound
a deep technical competence is imperative to
a lighting designer’s success and control
technology is playing an increasingly part.
Also, I would encourage every young
professional to acquire sufficient experience
as a team member in an established lighting
design practice or the industry before
venturing into self-employment.
