give a new look to the neighbourhood, are
chosen by a special committee that,
in addition to the artistic value, assesses their
environmental impact. Priority is given to
all those works that have special consideration
for green issues, use recyclable and easily
transportable materials, and prefer energy
saving light sources. Attention is such that
only 0.1% of the electricity consumed in a year
by the city is used for the whole festival!
Since there is no specific theme to follow,
the artists are free to create following their
very own inspiration.
Thus, the 39 installations of the 2016 edition
offered ludic moments, intimate spots, and
spectacular scenographies. Highly appreciated
by the crowd were the Évolutions projection
by Yann Nguema and Ez3kiel, which has
redrawn the facade of the Saint-Jean
Cathedral, the Voyage symbolic arrivals
and departures created by Camille Gross and
Leslie Epsztein on the facade of the Saint-Paul
station, and the playful reflection of an old
man with his friendly owl at Place des Terreaux
(Sans dessus, dessous, by Joseph Couturier).
Slightly “off circuit”, but no less amazing,
the Crystal Cloud projection by Urbanscreen
on the Musée des Confluences. The stunning
deconstructivist architecture by Coop
Himmelb(l)au witnessed a total
metamorphosis, thanks to the lasers and
textures that followed the sharp edges and
glass openings of the building overlooking
the spot where the Rhône and Saône merge
into a single river. Visible from most of the
Presq’île, the brilliant Philippe Cotten’s Soleil
on the Fourvière hill. A large sun rose, shone
and set at a short walking distance from
the Notre-Dame Cathedral, illuminating with
its rays the whole hill up to the Palais de
Justice, creating unique scenarios in a
poetically accelerated night-day cycle.
Really entertaining was the combination
of music and lights in the highly technogical
Roboticum dance by Yves Moreaux in Place
Bellecour, on the construction site turned into
a discotheque by La Bétonnière boule à facettes
conceived by Benedetto Bufalino and Benoit
Deseille , during the Les Lampadophores
parade by Stéphane Blanchard, and the
A piano sous la neige electronic concert
by Jean-Luc Hervé in the cosy Place Sathonay.
But the Fête des Lumières is also about
research and experimentation of new
materials, such as the luminous fabric
of the large Platonium chandelier, designed
by Eric Michel and Akari-Lisa Ishii fot the
courtyard of the Hotel de Ville, or the
Crystallized holographic sculpture by Theoriz
in the Musée Gadagne.
The joy and the light-hearted atmosphere
lingered in the streets, even after the turning
off of the lights. Anxiously waiting for the
next edition, the memory of such a grandiose
show remains in the hearts and minds
of those witnessed it.
