The opening night
for the new lighting
of the Trevi Fountain
and therefore also those of the fountains,
were switched off and later abandoned.
In 1981, for the tricentennial anniversary of
Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s death, with the interest
of the Sovrintendenza ai Monumenti, of the
Municipality and of tourism promotion
companies, ACEA started the renovation of the
lighting of the city’s monuments, starting from
churches’, buildings’ facades and from the
fountains realized by the great artist.
For the fountains it was decided to abandon
the old bulky luminaires directly supplied by the
electricity grid at 127 V and to start a study for
a new type of headlights that would allow to
increase the luminous efficiency, in order to
decrease the number of luminaires and which
would not be prone to corrosion but, above all, it
would be complying with the new regulation on
safety against the danger of electrocution which
imposes a limit tension equal to 12 V in c.a.
Underwater system with 12 V iodine
discharge lamps
Following the abovementioned indications,
a headlight was realized and it was used for all
Rome’s fountains. During the Trevi Fountain’s
renovation, between the eighties and the
nineties, which included the descaling of the
sculptures and of the cliff and the
waterproofing of the tank, the underwater
lighting system was realized, in agreement
with the Sovrintendenza. For the big tank the
headlights were recessed in specific recesses
made in the containment border, other
headlights were placed on the cliff to enhance
the water flows and the giant Oceanus statue.
For that system, completed in 1991, 85 headlights
with 100 W iodine discharge lamps were used for
a total absorbed power equal to 8,5 kW.
New system with LED lamps
In conjunction with the renovation of the
monument that ended last year, ACEA designed
the new lighting system, subdivided in two
parts: one characterized by the use, inside
the tank, of underwater projectors with LED
technology, and the other one made of
architectural projectors installed on the
shelves placed in front of the façade.
The installed underwater projectors are
aesthetically identical to those used in the
previous intervention, since they keep their
typical body made of brass fusion. Instead,
on the inside they are equipped with a plate
with 16 high efficiency LEDs, for an operating
power of 20W, compared to 100W in the
previous version. Their use was distributed
on the semicircular perimeter of the tank,
on the base of the cliff and on the inside of
the smaller tanks, at the foot of the sculpted
group. The water and the tank were
distinguished by the use of a white neutral
correlated color temperature equal to 4000K;
on the other hand, the statues’ marble is
characterized by the use of 3500 K LEDs.
A relevant aspect was the need to hide the
presence of cables. Indeed, since it was not
always possible to place the 12 V supply grid
in a duct, special cables H07RN8-F covered
with white membrane instead of the usual
black one were made.
The professionalism of the personnel entrusted
with the renovation, electricians and
designers, contributed to the great result
achieved, reducing at the minimum the
technological impact on the monument,
which is part of Rome’s and UNESCO’s heritage.
The architectural LED projectors, that lit the
Fountain’s facade, have an installed power
equal to 114 W and a correlated color
temperature equal to 3800K.
