Cariboni Group: Controlling light to protect the night
The best light is not the one that eliminates darkness, but the one that allows it to exist
For more than a hundred years, outdoor lighting has pursued two primary goals: enhancing city safety and, especially in recent decades, minimising energy consumption. Advances in technology have driven the sustainable systems, culminating in the widespread adoption of LED lighting— one of of illumination. use less energy, it has also made lighting However, in many settings, this has resulted in continues to expand both in amount and quality. This escalation is transforming the night-time environment and disrupting ecosystems. The core issue is not the technology itself, but how it is designed and employed. Today, evaluating a lighting design’ s quality genuinely essential, where it should be directed, when it should be used, and how it impacts people, biodiversity, and spatial perception. For too long, our attention has been centred on the energy consumption of light, focusing less on

It is a delicate balance among humans, nature, and space, in which light must ensure safety and liveability without undermining the value of darkness. The Cariboni Group the concept of Eco-Centric Lighting, a design philosophy that perceives light as a vital link between people, nature, and space. Technology is seen as a tool, not an end in itself: a way to provide lighting designers with solutions that combine visual comfort, a quality night-time experience, and respect for the environment. This vision has also given rise to research on the visual comfort of pedestrians and cyclists, conducted in collaboration with the Department of Energy at the Polytechnic University of Turin. As active mobility becomes increasingly popular, there is a need for design criteria that BLOS – Biophilic LED Optical System, an optical system designed to improve visual comfort for pedestrians and cyclists while simultaneously reducing light pollution to the sky and surrounding ecosystems, demonstrating that light quality and the protection of the night can form part of the design of a project. The cities of tomorrow won’ t just require more light— they will need better light, i. e., a light that can make spaces safe, welcoming, and liveable without diminishing the night’ s natural value.
