A2A Illuminazione Pubblica’ s project for the Mausoleum at the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera in province of Brescia
The Vittoriale degli Italiani, overlooking the shores of Lake Garda, stands as a masterpiece behest of Gabriele d’ Annunzio, who made it his home from 1921 until his passing in 1938, the complex transcends mere residence: it is a total work of art, in which architecture, landscape and symbolism intertwine in a narrative that celebrates life, art and national identity. Designed together with architect Gian Vittoriale is an experiential with meaning, culminating in the Mausoleum, Il Vate”( the poet d’ Annunzio’ s nickname, transl. note) and the embodiment of his aesthetic and spiritual vision. sponsored by the Fondazione Il Vittoriale degli Italiani and carried out by A2A Illuminazione Pubblica – a subsidiary of AEB, part of the A2A Group – focuses on this symbolic hub. launched in 2016, divided into several phases and aimed at enhancing the night time appearance of the entire monumental complex. The Mausoleum, which was completed after d’ Annunzio’ s death, draws inspiration from the Etruscan-Roman burial mounds and is structured in three concentric circles made of white stone, dedicated respectively to the Humbles, the Artisans and the Heroes. The poet’ s sarcophagus stands at the centre, on a raised platform, surrounded by the tombs of his companions. The architectural design puts the idea of ascension – a central theme in d’ Annunzio’ s thought – into a built form, a
concept that also guides the lighting design. The lighting design interprets and reinforces this symbolic framework through the calibrated use of light sources and colour temperatures. Linear 4000K light bars highlight the shape of the terraces, enhancing the stone’ s whiteness and visually accompanying the upward movement. The recessed lighting, which is discreetly integrated into the architecture, helps to soften contrasts and levels. Special attention has been paid to the vertical pathways and access points, where compact the summit. Here, there is an even stronger narrative quality to the light: the companions’ tombs are lit by vertical, shaped beams that whilst the central tomb stands out as the focal point, highlighted by beams of light that underscore its dominant role. low-heat LED solutions, integrating RGBW systems to manage dynamic lighting scenes
The system was designed to make use of existing cable ducts, minimising disruption and preserving the integrity of the monument. A dedicated electrical panel, equipped with smart systems, optimises consumption and between innovation and respect for the to light up the Mausoleum, but also becomes a story-telling element. The new lighting Vittoriale a whole new night-time dimension capable of expanding the dialogue between architecture, landscape and memory, in a contemporary spirit.
