Where design and technology shape the future of light |

“ Be Electrified – Electrifying Places. Illuminating Spaces.” That was the motto for the 2026 edition of Light + Building, the trade fair that is the world’ s premier event for lighting and building technology, which, from March 8 to 13, made Frankfurt the heartbeat of innovation and a must-attend event to discover the latest products and trends in lighting, electrical engineering, home and building automation, and security. True to this motto, Light + Building 2026 showcased how electrification, smart connectivity, and sustainable energy supply go hand in hand, complemented by lighting solutions that are revolutionising architecture. The focus of this edition, which explored the sector’ s primary current and future developments, was centered around the three key themes: Sustainable Transformation, Smart Connectivity, and Living Light. Sustainable Transformation showed the way to climate-friendly construction – from the integration of renewable energy to intelligent energy management, and from resourceefficient product design to the use of sustainable materials. On the other hand, Smart Connectivity highlighted digital transformation via interconnected systems, data-driven control, and interfaces that increase efficiency, safety and comfort, thus demonstrating how intelligent networks lay the foundation for efficient, safe, and sustainable buildings, ensuring their resilience. In parallel, Living Light focused on the emotional and creative power of light as a significant factor in shaping the identity, wellbeing, and experiential ambiance of living spaces. Light not only guides, creates atmosphere, and influences your emotions, it also contributes to well-being, boosts performance, and facilitates communication. On top of that, it is also deeply intertwined with nature and with the home as a space of experience, connection, and relationships. Light + Building unveiled for the first time a special area where the exhibition The Living Light – where Design and Technology |
Shape the Future, brought together all facets of light in a holistic way through a pioneering immersive spatial experience. With an evocative journey through four different areas – Home, Education, Work and Communication – it illustrated how new lighting technologies can enrich your everyday life. The visitors were guided through the installation along the Green Spine – a luminous corridor covered in greenery connecting the four thematic spaces, and symbolising growth, transformation, and the close relationship between human beings and the environment. The concept was developed by Berlin-based lighting design studio Lichtvision Design under the direction of Carla Wilkins, member of the Board of Directors of IALD( International Association of Lighting Designers). Light + Building also hosted a first-time event, the IALD International Lighting Design Awards – a prestigious recognition of excellence in lighting design, honoring projects that blend technical mastery with advanced aesthetics, while creating atmosphere and enhancing architecture. Alongside the solutions showcased by the industry exhibitors, Light + Building 2026 offered |
a packed programme of events focusing on current trends, technological developments and creative inspiration, with forums, debates, interactive formats, conferences, roundtables and special exhibitions dedicated to the theme of lighting design. This year’ s edition, again, revolved around the Design Plaza( Hall 3.1), the hub of the action, especially for interior designers, architects, designers, and lighting designers. Among the array of activities, the trend scouts from the bora. herke. palmisano agency were aimed to unveil what the lighting trends will be for 2026 / 27. Although international air passengers faced challenges amidst the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the event still drew an impressive global presence. A remarkable 1,927 exhibitors from 49 nations showcased their offerings, while an extensive audience of 144,767 visitors from 143 countries – including China, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Greece – gathered at the Fair.
Looking forward to seeing you at Light + Building 2028!
