The new circular supply chain for lighting
For years, the lighting industry has followed a linear model: design, production, sale, use and disposal. This model, which has propelled the sector’ s growth for decades, is now showing clear limitations, such as over-exploitation of resources, generation of waste and technologies that quickly become obsolete. RE. VALUE, LumeItalia proposes a reverse supply chain- from end of life to a new beginning. Each device is designed to be dismantled, regenerated and reinserted into the production cycle. Thanks to their modular and standardized components, only the worn parts are replaced, thus drastically reducing the use of virgin raw materials. A refurbished emissions than a new one, eliminating industrial waste and extending the product’ s lifespan. This model is reinforced by the environmental credit, a mechanism similar to a deposit refund that assigns an economic value to an incentive- it is an ethical agreement between the manufacturer and the user, who share responsibility for the product’ s life cycle. In this way, LumeItalia anticipates European regulations on extended producer responsibility and digital product passports, ensuring total traceability and transparency. RE. VALUE redesigns the industrial structure, PAY x LUX revolutionises the customer does not purchase the lamp but pays a fee based on the amount of light remain the responsibility of the manufacturer. For local authorities and businesses, this means certain and transparent costs, no capital immobilisation, no depreciation and continuous access to the most advanced technologies. The LUME. FI platform, developed by LumeItalia and based on the NB IoT network, contributes to making this transformation possible. Each luminaire communicates its status in real time, reports anomalies and enables predictive maintenance. Algorithms automatically adjust light intensity based energy savings without compromising safety. There are dedicated dashboards that component status, and environmental data, helping administrations and utilities make informed decisions. This network of street lights thus becomes the digital backbone of smart cities, integrating and urban services. PAY x LUX encourages the gradual adoption of these features. Contracts provide for periodic updates and the possibility of integrating new sensors and interfaces, progressively transforming the infrastructure into a connected urban ecosystem.
LumeItalia’ s circular approach entails not only the industrial aspect, but also the social one. A its context generates safety, identity and wellbeing. Regenerating it means transforming it into a symbol of participation in a fairer economy, where goods are not depleted but reborn. In addition, local regeneration stimulates the thanks to technical training programmes aimed at young professionals and technicians in the sector. From an environmental perspective, the model alleviates pressure on supply chains for critical raw materials such as aluminium and copper, reduces dependence on rare earths and limits transport-related emissions thanks to the creation of local reuse centres. LCA analysis shows that the cumulative environmental impact cycle of use. From a regulatory perspective, RE. VALUE and PAY x LUX and digital product passports, ensuring full compliance and transparency. At the same time, they actively involve users- citizens and operators can interact via apps and portals, reporting faults, adjusting lighting or accessing environmental data for their neighbourhood. Looking to the future, the RE. VALUE + PAY x LUX ecosystem will be expanded with blockchain for traceability, local energy communities, bio-based materials and new partnerships with start-ups and research centres. PAD22
