inspiring to be able to embrace both aspects of a lamp , as you are not designing only a form . You are designing two different things here . Then it develops into new types of light ? It is the structure , the background and core of my approach as a lighting designer . From there on , every single piece is addressing other qualities .
What do you think will happen in the way of using light after this kind of transition pause , this period that has just passed ? Well , the idea I mentioned earlier - that things change - applies to the now , and moreover I am convinced that you must really embrace change , accept new ideas , explore new ways of living . You cannot be nostalgic about change , because the world is different every day and it truly will be different . The destruction of the planet is inevitable in a way , but somehow , something else will take place . I do not think we can be romantic about what we lost in the past because we would experience that every day and it would be very painful . Rather than thinking that it is a pity that things are different from twenty , a hundred years ago , we should focus on the positives and try to retain certain values and qualities , whether it is poetry or anything that enriches our life , making it interesting . You can never go back , you can never rewind and try to be nostalgic over lost qualities . We are here for a period of time and we have the responsibility to leave this place a better place than the one we came in . You may lose other things along the way but we must retain the beauty .
Something more personal , you are known to collect stones … I have always been intrigued by the role of nature as a designer and I cultivate the idea of discovering or finding beauty and searching for perfection . I am always fascinated about how perfection can exist naturally . In nature you have these beautifully shaped stones - or drawn like manmade objects - in ways you cannot believe are accidental .
How do you relate with your products , or with the public who uses your product ? It is a big surprise ! As a designer it is amazing because from the moment you release a product , your responsibility will change . You cannot modify the product , you cannot do anything about it anymore . Your function is over . You start seeing and discovering things that you never thought about , because your product touches everybody in a different way . Therefore , from the moment they decide to use it differently or see something differently through it , you have no control over it . This is the beauty of design ! It is that element of unpredictability that you do not think of - we can only think of certain things - then somebody else can participate as well in your idea and they can take this product and do something new . I love observing how people use my objects .
