Neaples ’ public lighting transition to LED lighting
Adapting LED products to series installations
Upgrading lighting systems in a large city is a complex undertaking : new LED lighting system technologies often face the practical and economic impossibility of replacing or upgrading systems made for discharge lamps . It is therefore the manufacturer ’ s task to adapt its products to existing installations , in an attempt to simplify replacement and fitting operations without losing system efficiency and visual comfort . Such is the case of Naples , a city that has been carrying out a major redevelopment of its public lighting for several years now . The project is part of the Energy Efficiency Plan , which aims to improve public services in terms of energy efficiency , technological innovation and increased safety standards . The renewal of the lighting system therefore focuses on energy saving , but it is also strategically aimed at increasing the quality of public space in terms of urban decorum and safety . GMR ENLIGHTS is helping the public lighting operator by supplying the Vesta street luminaire , a LED lighting solution characterised by its high quality design and versatility of installation . Thanks to its Glassed optical technology , Vesta offers lighting quality and visual comfort . The Timeless solution is quick to install and easy to maintain , as the luminaire can be opened and the internal components replaced without the need for tools . Vesta has been adapted to the technical requirements of the existing series system , which is impossible to upgrade in a city such as Naples , with its significant traffic load and urban stratification . Series lighting systems were used in large cities because they made it possible to supply very large circuits with just a few cabins , without the inconvenience of voltage drops resulting in a lower supply flow . These are systems that connect lighting devices in series , unlike the more recent junction systems that work by connecting lighting points in parallel . The series systems were sized to match exactly the type of discharge lamps originally connected . Because of this specificity , the conversion of the luminaires installed in Naples to LED technology involved two critical issues . Firstly , the system provided the installed conventional lamps with high power supply ( 1.2-1.8 A ), which would put any LED system out of action . In order to overcome this problem , our luminaires have been equipped with a rectifier , an electronic device that allows the LEDs to be powered on several channels , if required . The second problem is the lack of freedom in the design process . Unlike contemporary systems , which allow flexibility
in setting the supply current of the individual product with a marked reduction in consumption , the series system forces the designer to use products that are sized according to the power of the former lamps . In order to achieve good lighting and energy-efficient results , it is therefore necessary for the product to offer extreme optical flexibility . Vesta can be fitted with a wide range of lighting solutions that , combined with the efficiency of the Glassed optical system , ensure effective lighting . Despite the technical and design constraints , the conversion of the systems to LED technology has therefore led to significant energy savings , with an increase in the quality of public lighting and visual comfort , for a better enjoyment of the urban space .
