Enel X manages public lighting in a smart way
The energy sector is experiencing one of the most important revolutions of the last 50 years and the companies with their choices play a fundamental role in guiding the entire branch . The future must necessarily be sustainable and the present serves to prepare the ground for the complete transition to an energy system supported by renewable sources . Already today , giant strides have been taken at various levels : sustainability also means optimization of costs , efficiency and circular economy . And Enel X , the global business line for advanced services of the Enel Group , strongly believes in these principles and in the benefits of digitalisation even in a sector such as public lighting , where it is a world leader . Enel X manages 2.8 million light points , of which 1.6 million in Italy , on behalf of 3 thousand customers in 5 countries ( Italy , Spain , Chile , Colombia and Peru ). Last year , to implement their own solutions , in line with the Group ’ s Open Power strategy , the company launched a challenge dedicated to start-ups that would propose ideas to reduce the maintenance costs of public lighting . For Enel X , optimizing the costs of construction , management and maintenance of the system is an important aspect since even a small saving of time and money can have a significant impact on a global scale . Among the solutions received , that of IPTSAT was chosen , an Italian start-up that offers services for the management and monitoring of the territory and the environment through interaction with the public administration , research centres , universities and professionals in the area , providing high professionalism on geospatial technologies ( satellite remote sensing , GIS , databases , maps , etc .). These technologies have been used by Enel X to map the light points of the cities involved in the project through three fundamental operations : updating the census of light points or detection of new lighting points ; the detection of anomalies in the existing lighting database ( cleaning work ); the classification of the brightness of the light points ( 250 classes ). To date , a Proof of Concept has been launched in 3 important cities in which the Group is present : Pescara , Mostoles , in Spain , and Puente Alto in Chile and the first results obtained have shown how the system leads to advantages both from an environmental point of view ( in terms optimization of consumption ) and from an economic one , with a view to developing a sustainable and efficient business .
