Cities are transforming at an ever faster pace, in a growing urbanization driven also by the constantly evolving technologies that deeply influence everyday life. The ongoing transformation puts urban infrastructure under great pressure, representing a challenge that can be tackled in a sustainable way with a vision of the urban ecosystem based on the circular economy principles. Most Italian cities still use traditional and obsolete Enel X’s “smart” city is here even further, to the most advanced frontier available today, offering the latest adaptive lighting technologies: solutions that make it possible to adjust light flows according to actual traffic, weather conditions, and ambient brightness. All this thanks to a video camera system capable of processing data and digital systems providing also the video surveillance service, for the safety of citizens and in support of the authorities in charge, with the utmost respect for privacy. Another pillar for the GDPR regulations, and cyber security, without affecting the speed or immediacy of the data provided. Enel X’s public lighting system is “smart” because it involves the installation of LED lighting centres that ensure significant energy savings (-60%), better light quality, reduced light pollution, and a longer system lifetime at lower maintenance costs. A LED lighting to which a remote control is added, allowing real-time monitoring of the status of the systems and of the quality of service provided to citizens, with advantages in terms of operating costs and road safety. A set of tools that can be managed through the YoUrban platform, which allows citizens and PA to interact with the company. This is how people become active protagonists in the monitoring of the urban fabric, directly reporting faults and malfunctions of the infrastructure with a click via the YoUrban app, which can be downloaded through online stores. These include City Analytics, Enel X’s open data platform that reconstructs traffic flows, supporting Public Administrations in their planning of urban activities, with potential benefits for both public and private stakeholders. This tool is useful, for instance, for the optimization of the distribution of services in cities, or for the implementation of the traffic light system in the busiest streets. In this COVID-19 emergency period, Enel X has developed and made available to Public Administrations a new release of the “City Analytics - Mobility Map” tool, thanks to which it is possible to access data on the movement of citizens throughout Italy, as useful information for the planning of the so-called “Phase 2”.
