Although efforts are still being made by antihunting groups, the State decided that enough
was enough and that Bears needed to be
harvested. You can still encounter anti-hunting
groups at check stations. On a personal note,
I wish that these anti-hunting groups could
spend some time with the DEP agents, see what
they do, working in the field, compiling data,
preservation and management of species,
etc., to see exactly what they do, what the
problems are, and that part of the solution is
management and to remove the bears.
The
hunters, whether resident or non-resident
generate revenue which also funds so many
things in the state.
As I’m writing this article, a news story came
during September 2014 that a college senior
was killed by a Black Bear while hiking with
others in a West Milford, New Jersey Nature
Preserve. With the number of bears in New
Jersey, I’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened
more frequently.
New Jersey hosts a six day firearm season hunt
in December. As with every state, the rules
and regulations are specific;
shotgun or muzzleloader are
the only weapons that can be
used and baiting is legal. You
cannot use a tree stand or
ground blind within 300 feet
