To make it more appealing, a Senior Invitational team was included, consisting of four anglers who’d just missed being selected for the Senior team, but who’d been awarded Protea colours in the past. The festival concept is well known to the anglers and put a very competitive edge on the competition. The Invitational Team had to prove that they were still good anglers and they did not disappoint. Achieving wins on Day 1 and 2, and this team was on the way to the podium, or so they thought. Then the Senior Team won Day 3 and it was a race to the end. The Seniors needed to win Day 4 with 120 kg more weight than the Invitational Team, but this did not happen, and the Invitational Team emerged victorious. The winner of the Festival Competition was Kyle Schmidt. He fished with old-timer Len Alkers, who has achieved Springbok and Protea colours more than 20 times. Their pairing ended up the winning combination. What we can say is never write off an old Protea angler. These anglers can be included into the Senior team any day of the week and perform well. A Protea Ladies team and a Protea Invitational Team competition also took place - and it was a good fight to the end.
