Saltash has its own Community Cinema, thanks to Danielle Frith –
owner of the Truly Scrumptious shop, and the support of Saltash Town
Improvement Group to set up. At the first show, Saltash Guildhall was
buzzing with people, and there was a brilliant atmosphere. Everybody
we spoke to said they were very pleased to have a cinema in Saltash,
and to not have to travel across the bridge.
The children we spoke to were pleased to see their friends at the cinema.
The adults we spoke to all thought it’s fantastic that we can ‘keep it local’
– for families, but also for grown-ups to have their own evenings enjoying
classic films. Here’s our interview with organiser Danielle…
When and how did you start Saltash Cinema?
I started it because I thought the town needed something fun, for
families, on a Saturday, that wasn’t expensive and everyone could enjoy.
How successful do you think it’s been so far?
I think it’s been very successful, and I’m so happy! We took enough money
at the first show to do another film after our six-month trial period has run
out.
That’s great news, so what’s the future for Saltash Cinema?
Well I’d hope to keep on getting lots of money in, from people supporting
the cinema and also from local businesses advertising on our website. I’d
like to keep it running for as long as possible.
After speaking to Danielle, we asked a local councillor about the benefit of
the cinema to the town and community. Her view is that it’s great because
it brings lots of people into the centre of the town. “Some people hadn’t
been in the Guildhall before,” she said, “and this brings them in and they
might buy some things from the shops on their way so that’s good for the
businesses in the town. It works on lots of different levels.”
Since the first show, there have been two back-to-back ‘singalong’
screenings of Frozen, and the Christmas film most Saltash people voted for
was Elf. There are lots of exciting possibilities for Saltash Cinema, and many
more shows are already planned for the coming months (see saltashcinema.
co.uk for full information and updates).
