I used humane horsemanship and classical dressage techniques to gradually bring him up to the level shown in the last picture. Sadly, we only had a few years together before some of his physical problems became incurable.

Horses who did not grow up with humans are not often unwanted, but training them may also take extra time and special skills. Whatever the horse's problems are, I have always tried to find the most humane way to correct them. This approach is what I used to tame, gentle, and train a terrified young mustang who had never been handled before he came to me.

In his case, I kept detailed records that were the basis for our book, A Marvelous Mustang: Tales from the Life of a Spanish Horse. In this unusual memoir, he tells his own story. It has been described as "a delightful tale of a relationship between a human and a horse. Their experiences together show a beautiful bond full of mutual love and respect." We are shown together in the picture below.
