Yarraleigh Curly Horse Stud
Being allergic to horses yet loving them was so hard growing up. The skin break outs, the eyes watering and swelling up was just so hard to deal with. I’m sure if you aren't allergic to horses it’s difficult to understand how hard it is just to have contact with your horse when you are allergic. One pat could equal hours of puffy eyes and skin rashes that could sometimes take days to go down properly. When I read about the Curlies, I knew this was the direction I wanted to take and am loving having these beautiful horses in Australia. Some people believe their coats are curly all year round, well they aren’t. In summer their coats are as smooth as velvet after they shed their winter curls, just their mane, tails and ears remain curly. If rugged they would be smooth all year round.
The Curly is a breed of horse that is known to be hypo-allergenic. Recent studies have concluded that the Curly Horse is hypo-allergenic which means that people with allergies will have little to no reaction to them. Research indicates a protein is missing from the coat of the Curlies which may be what causes the allergic reactions to horses in allergy sufferers, but the study has never been officially published. Curly horses are a dream come true for allergic horse lovers giving them the chance to pursue their love of horses!!!!!!!
Here at Yarraleigh Curly Horse Stud (located just outside Ballarat in Victoria), our foundation stallion “FloraLake Moonlight Schimm’l” aka Moony throws both curly coated and minimal curl coated foals. The curly coat is self explanatory, whereas you can barely tell the minimal curly coated foals are curlies apart from the wave in their mane, tail and ears. We imported Moony from Canada in 2011 and his second crop of foals has just finished. We are thrilled with all of his foals.
Curlies come in all sizes, colours and body types, but all carry a gene for a unique curly coat of hair. The Curlies are known for their calm, intelligent and friendly personality and show an easily trainable temperament. They are also known for having a tough constitution and great stamina. The Curly has a characteristic long stride and bold movement. They have tough hooves, strong bones and exceptional endurance. Most Curlies stand between 14 and 16 hands.
