CONSERVATION SPOTLIGHT:
SURVIVAL OF THE ADDAX
An antelope native to the Sahara desert and distinguished by its
long, twisted horns, the addax is critically endangered largely due to
overhunting, though habitat encroachment and chronic drought have
also exacerbated its plight. Since the Louisville Zoo opened in 1969,
addax have been a part of our exhibits and our conservation programs.

accredited facilities. In July of 2017, our male addax, Laird, joined our
Zoo family. A year later, our female, Patella, gave birth to a calf — the
59th addax calf born at the Louisville Zoo.
Handsome herbivores that they are, addax have been making Zoo
guests smile and say “awwww” for almost 50 years. At the same
time, our efforts behind the scenes are part of something larger: a
conservation initiative with global reach. As a participant in the AZA’s
Species Survival Plan — a cooperative management program that
undertakes species conservation, research, husbandry, management,
and education — the Louisville Zoo works to make the ongoing hope
for a species’ survival, like those of our addax, into a reality.
ZOO FAQ: WHY
IS A TORTOISE IN
THE ADDAX YARD?
We like to think that Spike, our African spur-thigh tortoise, simply
enjoys the laid-back environment of the addax exhibit and the company
of our chilled-out antelope. What we know is that the space supports
the highest level of welfare for the tortoise, providing him with a large
yard for exercise and plenty of grass to munch on. Come winter, Spike
will head over to the Boma African Petting Zoo barn, returning to the
addax yard each spring.
Throughout this report, we wish to acknowledge you — the many generous Louisville Zoo friends and advocates — who made a gift in
support of annual operations, conservation, capital needs and special projects between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018. We continue to be
the #1 nonprofit attraction in the region and are saving species in Kentucky and around the world through your generous support.
