of 18 students ages 3 and 4. Each week, the children received
“homework” activities to engage their parents and caregivers at
home, demonstrating how the Zoo can enhance learning moments
between parents and children.
In response to evaluation and feedback, the Zoo will begin a two-
day-per-week preschool schedule as of fall 2018. We’re also thrilled
to report that the next cohort of preschoolers will be among the
first to use the Cub House, our amazing new early learning play
space, presented by PNC, when it opens in 2019.

Now more than ever, our teachers need as many good resources as
they can get. As a leader in informal, student-centered education,
the Louisville Zoo is poised to assist teachers as they transition away
from their current teaching practices and toward new strategies
developed to support higher-order thinking among students.
As research shows, science learning is enhanced when it originates
within the student and occurs organically once they are inspired to
know more. In consultation with the Conservation Science Teacher
Advisory Team, the Zoo has designed classroom resources for
teachers that align with this student-empowering approach — an
approach that’s at the very heart of STEM learning.

In March 2018, the Zoo announced
that one of its most popular residents,
African elephant Mikki, was pregnant
following a successful artificial
insemination.
Mikki’s new calf is expected in
summer 2019 and, along with Asian
elephant Punch, will bring the Zoo’s
herd to three.
