legs. He underwent months of post-war
rehab where he states it was his doctors’
faith in him and their determination to see
him walk that gave him hope. He ended up
passing away peacefully with family nearby
shortly after our introduction.
Reflecting on these lives gives me chills.
Their sacrifice and struggle make my eyes
tear. I forget all too often what it means
to be a doctor. Even the strongest become

sick and need our assistance; and it is in
this time of great vulnerability that they
come, with hopes and fears, to us in our
promise to help them. These are war heroes,
someone’s father, someone’s grandfather,
someone’s husband and they deserve, just as
all do whom we care for, medical attention
that we would be proud to give to our own
family members. I do not deserve the honor of even speaking to such extraordinary
individuals, and yet they listen tentatively
to every word we say, genuinely attempting
to understand every recommendation we
offer, frequently asking us directly to “Do
what you think best Doc”—a 90-year-old
war hero putting his entire life’s trust in my
28 year old hands.
