“ I also believe,” she said with a smile in her voice,“ and I can hear my grandmother saying this now, that food is medicine.” Her admiration for her family’ s wisdom surfaced again when she talked about her mother.“ My mom could be a Michelin chef,” she joked.“ She could take grass and make it taste like foie gras.”
Behind the humor is genuine respect for traditions that emphasized nourishing the body long before wellness became a popular buzzword. For her, the future of medicine lies not in choosing between Eastern and Western philosophies, but in thoughtfully integrating the best of both.
Today, she serves on the UofL Athletic Association Board of Directors, maintaining the connection between sports and medicine that first inspired her as a young gymnast. She works with athletes, helps patients recover from pain and teaches future physicians, all while continuing to learn herself.
Despite an impressive resumé, she speaks very little about accolades. Instead, she returns to gratitude. Gratitude for parents who sacrificed everything, for mentors who opened doors, for patients who place their
trust in her. And simply for the privilege of doing meaningful work.
“ I think every day about how lucky we all are to just breathe on this earth,” she said.“ To have the opportunity to help others is just 24 karat gold and something I’ ll never take for granted.”
It is a perspective that explains why she is as comfortable mentoring a nervous medical student as she is comforting a frightened patient before surgery. It explains why she still lights up talking about gymnastics, why she treasures weekends with her niece and nephew, and why she believes the best physicians never stop listening to their teammates.
After all, she learned her earliest lessons about teamwork long before she entered an operating room. They began in a family that believed in possibility, on a well-worn couch that doubled as a gymnastics vault, surrounded by people who taught her that the greatest accomplishments are never achieved alone.
