In Remembrance David Gajadhar, MD 5 / 10 / 1935-2 / 07 / 2026
A Life in Medicine and Service
David Gajadhar’ s lifelong commitment to education and medicine shaped a career defined by perseverance, clinical excellence and service to underserved populations. He often reflected on his school years as among the most formative of his life, where a deep love of learning took root. That intellectual curiosity carried him through higher education, culminating in a medical degree. His academic journey ultimately laid the foundation for a distinguished career in obstetrics and gynecology.
Born on May 10, 1935, in Guyana, David was the sixth of nine children in a rural farming family. His early life was marked by limited resources but strong familial and cultural values. Despite these constraints, he excelled academically and earned a full scholarship to Evansville College( now the University of Evansville) in Indiana, where he completed a degree in biology with a minor in chemistry.
Following his undergraduate education, he pursued graduate studies in public health at Tulane University in New Orleans. His time there reflected an early and sustained interest in population health. He remained involved in efforts to combat filarial disease in Guyana.
Medical Training and Career
After relocating to Canada, David initially worked as a high school teacher in rural Saskatchewan. He soon returned to his primary ambition of practicing medicine and enrolled in medical school at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in 1971. His postgraduate training included clinical work in Flint and Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he gained broad experience before ultimately establishing his medical practice in Louisville, Kentucky.
As an obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Gajadhar built a reputation for
compassionate, patient-centered care. He was particularly dedicated to serving underserved communities, often providing care to patients with limited access to medical services. Over the course of his career, he delivered thousands of infants and supported women through critical stages of their reproductive health, making a lasting impact on generations of families.
Colleagues and patients alike recognized his commitment to clinical excellence, as well as his ability to connect with patients from diverse backgrounds. His work reflected not only technical skill but also a deep sense of responsibility to the communities he served.
Personal Life and Legacy
Dr. Gajadhar married his wife, Bibi, in 1963. Together they built a family while navigating multiple international moves throughout his training and early career. They raised three children, Allan, Saudia and Chad, while he balanced the demands of medical practice with family life.
Outside of medicine, he remained engaged in his community, including long-standing service within the Presbyterian church as both an elder and deacon. His personal interests included sports, music and time spent with family, but his professional identity remained central to his life’ s work.
Dr. Gajadhar’ s legacy is one of resilience, dedication and meaningful contribution to both clinical medicine and public health. Rising from modest beginnings in rural Guyana to a successful medical career in North America, he exemplified the transformative power of education and the enduring impact of compassionate care.
