leader, enjoys camping and travel, and has recently taken up skiing with his family.“ We started off going to Snowshoe in West Virginia for a couple of seasons. The past two years, we’ ve gone to Beaver Creek in Colorado,” he said.“ Anna and I didn’ t grow up skiing but thought it’ d be something cool to try. The kids have taken to it.”
Travel has become a family priority. They have recently gone on a spring break trip to Costa Rica, a summer road trip through California to see the sequoias and an ever-expanding list of experiences for the children.
He also keeps his mind engaged with podcasts and audiobooks. A favorite is Freakonomics Radio.“ It’ s interesting to listen to and realize how little you know when you start listening to things like that. I’ m very much in my own little world in oncology and doing the dad thing, so I’ m always interested in learning about new things in different fields.”
Dr. Hart envisions the next phase of his career not as reinvention but as steady continuation. His goals are straightforward: retire around 60, stay healthy and enjoy watching his children grow into adulthood.
“ I’ m excited to see what my kids end up doing and watching them become the people they’ re going to become,” he said.“ I’ ve been here 13 years and that has gone by in a flash. So, if I do that again, just one more time, 13 more years will be gone before I know it too.”
He also hopes to find ways to volunteer in retirement, continuing to give back even as his clinical days wind down.
His story is about consistency: the steady pursuit of knowledge, the commitment to patients and the balance of family and career. In oncology, victories are measured in years added, milestones reached and moments reclaimed. For Dr. Hart, each of those victories is a reminder of why he chose this path in the first place.
Put simply,“ The people I can cure are the biggest wins.”
