From Burnout to Balance
Kentucky With Kids
( In the Fall) by Benjamin Rogers, MD
As the heat waves subside and the pools close, those of us with kids turn to the great outdoors to keep our kids from driving us crazy and ensure our homes are minimally destroyed. To that end, here are some places to consider. Just remember to say hi if you see our stroller. I’ ll include a few indoor options at the end, with slightly less to say.
LOCAL( same day)
» Unsung park heroes- Everyone knows Seneca and the local playgrounds. For extended outings, we often head slightly farther afield or off the beaten path.
• Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve- This is a path often taken, with a great playground and lots of space. There are lots of people, too. But if you wear clothes that can get a little dirty, they have some nice paths to walk.
• Beckley Creek- Another place fairly well known, particularly to those who live in the area, but this one offers an opportunity to get dirty and wet in the same trip, which is what every parent is hoping will happen.
• Hays Kennedy- You don’ t go here for the playground. If you’ re willing to brave taller grass, this park offers a more secluded experience, with intermittent river views.
• If you get thirsty after dragging your kids along the river at Hays Kennedy, head to Third Turn( Oldham Gardens); you’ ll still be outdoors but you will be slightly less stressed if you stay a while.
