STRONGER TOGETHER for Better Care

TEAMWORK On and Off the Field TEAMWORK On and Off the Field

by Justin Chu, MD

Summer is always an exciting time in the world of sports. Baseball is in full swing, fall sports are just around the corner, and here in Louisville, our professional soccer teams are hitting peak form. Not to mention, the buzz around the“ ReviVille” is always popping. There’ s a special kind of energy in the air that reflects our city’ s deep connection to athletics. Louisville has a strong sports fan base, and our community thrives on the success of our hometown teams and athletes. Whether it’ s a night game at Lynn Stadium or an evening at Slugger Field, there’ s nothing quite like soaking in the sights, sounds and community spirit that make Louisville such a vibrant sports town.

That same spirit of teamwork and camaraderie is at the heart of sports medicine. One of the fastest-growing and most competitive subspecialties in medicine, sports medicine focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries. Our patient population spans from pediatric athletes and weekend warriors to collegiate competitors and elite professionals. At UofL Health – Sports Medicine, we have the privilege of caring for Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC, University of Louisville athletes, the Louisville Bats AAA baseball team and numerous local high school teams. These partnerships offer a unique opportunity to engage with high-level sports while staying deeply rooted in the local community.
We strive to individualize care plans based on each patient’ s goals, whether that means competing for a championship or simply tossing a baseball with their grandchildren. In pediatric patients especially, we emphasize the values that sports teach— resilience, teamwork and healthy exercise habits. Prevention is also a core tenet of our care. Through education on proper biomechanics, training loads and nutrition, we help reduce injury risk and support long-term athlete development.
Medicine is, in more ways than not, a team sport. But as in athletics, it’ s the strength and cohesion of your team that sets you apart. Sports medicine is a specialty that thrives on both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration for the best patient outcomes. Our collective goal is to optimize the health, performance and recovery of every athlete we serve. Within our network, we work alongside orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, athletic trainers, physical therapists, dietitians, strength and conditioning coaches and mental health professionals. Everyone brings a unique skill set, but we are united by a shared purpose: taking care of the whole athlete.
The beauty of this teamwork lies in understanding each other’ s roles and responsibilities. Just like Kobe and Shaq needed one another, we trust that our talents in tandem are more synergistic than multiple specialists acting alone. It’ s not about who makes the diagnosis or who performs the surgery— it’ s about delivering coordinated, comprehensive
