don’ t typically write articles for Louisville Medicine in the first person. But in spending time trying to figure which Artificial Intelligence( AI) agents would be most appropriate for me, I realized that I needed to understand that choice is a human need, even if information is provided to us by sophisticated digital sources. So, as I reviewed the agents that I know and the ones new to me, I realized that selection of an AI tool for clinical practice enhancement is just as personal as buying a new car.
Artificial Intelligence for the general population burst upon the scene in November 2022, with the public deployment of ChatGPT. Since then, there has been a proliferation of AI agents, an explosion of media coverage and enormous expenditures of capital. For the physician trying to see patients in the midst of this AI torrent, there is understandable confusion. I, for one, have put my clinical toe into the surging rapids of technology by trying out various AI agents to help me. To start with, I have not been impressed with the quality or appropriateness of the“ patient education” materials resident in my Electronic Health Record( EHR). With the tool I have, patient educational materials can be generated only in English or Spanish. I have found myself taking such educational material and plugging it into Google Translate; yet I have no understanding whether such translation breaches the cultural barriers of our usual English education( I hope I have not offended any of my patients or given them bad advice through faulty translation).
So, I have turned to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic Claude and Doximity to provide basic patient education. I do have to review the English language content for accuracy. On a personal level I have found that DoxGPT and Claude provide better patient information. All four of these tools can translate 40 or more different languages.
