PRESCRIBING CHANGE
than dictating to them , I could oftentimes foster a collaborative environment .
These skills laid the foundation for my journey through several leadership positions in my career . From fulfilling chief resident duties and co-founding a non-profit organization , to serving as President of an independent otolaryngology practice in Louisville , I used the lessons I learned to continue developing my capabilities to work closely with team members , valuing their input and fostering a cooperative environment that emphasizes teamwork , shared decision-making and mutual respect to achieve goals .
Advocacy : A New Perspective on Medicine
My tenure as the P & A Chair has underscored the importance of these elements . Advocacy is inherently collaborative ; it demands engagement with a diverse group of stakeholders , from fellow physicians to legislators and community leaders . It necessitates staying abreast of legislative changes and understanding their potential impacts on our profession and patient care .
Participating in advocacy efforts has broadened my perspective on the role of medicine in society . It has illuminated how policy decisions ripple through our health care system , affecting everything from patient access to care delivery . Understanding these dynamics has reinforced my belief that physicians must be more than clinicians ; we must be advocates for our patients and champions for systemic improvements . Disparities exist within our health care system , and there is the urgent need for reforms .
The Power of a Unified Voice
One of the most rewarding aspects of being the P & A Chair is witnessing the power of a unified voice in effecting change . The collective efforts of our committee have led to tangible outcomes in policy reform , enhancing both the practice environment for physicians and the care experience for patients . This unity is a testament to what can be achieved when we come together with a shared purpose .
Let ’ s take a closer look at the achievements of the GLMS P & A Committee .
Elevating Voices on Controversial Issues
From the outset , our committee faced challenging discussions on sensitive topics such as women ’ s health rights and gun violence policies . One of our most significant achievements was leading a discussion on women ’ s reproductive rights at the Kentucky Medical Association ( KMA ) House of Delegates . This effort helped highlight the myriad issues Kentucky laws were causing for women , affecting everything from access to health care to the training of our physicians and the litigation risks they face when making lifeand-death decisions .
Additionally , GLMS successfully led the charge for the creation of the KMA Work Group on Gun Violence and Firearm Safety . By leading the floor discussions and securing votes , we paved the way for vital discussions to help impart meaningful change in how gun violence safety is addressed in our state .
Advocating for Physician-Led Medicine
In Kentucky , the debate over the scope of practice among health care providers is about ensuring the highest quality of care in the Commonwealth . As Chair , I advocated for physician-led medicine , emphasizing the unique expertise physicians bring to patient care . While nonphysician extenders play an important role in medicine today , substituting them for roles requiring a physician ’ s experience and expertise can compromise the high standards of medical practice . Our advocacy efforts aimed at ensuring that any expansion in practice scope included appropriate oversight and collaboration with physicians to safeguard patients and maintain care quality . Seeing physicians and advanced practice providers collaborate to draft legislation that enhances medical care has been rewarding .
A Personal Reflection on Leadership
Leadership is not a solitary endeavor ; it is deeply rooted in the connections we make and the relationships we build . Throughout my career , I ’ ve learned that much can be accomplished when we are open to learning from those around us , valuing their experiences and integrating diverse perspectives into decision-making processes . Each interaction with colleagues , mentors and those I have had the privilege to lead has shaped my approach to leadership . I ’ ve come to understand that humility and empathy are as essential as strategic vision and decisiveness .
While the GLMS P & A Committee has made significant strides in advocating for important issues , our work is far from done . The challenges we face are complex and ongoing , demanding sustained effort and engagement . There is still a pressing need for reforms to address disparities in our health care system , ensure patient access to high-quality care and advocate for policies that truly reflect our values as physicians . Our journey requires collaboration , listening and finding common ground to foster a health care environment that prioritizes our patients ’ health and safety . I encourage any physician interested in making a difference to join the GLMS Policy and Advocacy Committee . Your insights and experiences can amplify our collective voice and ensure that we continue to push for impactful reforms and represent the interests of our community effectively .
