Levels of Prevention
Preventive medicine operates at three levels :
• Primary Prevention : Vaccinations stand as one of the most impactful public health interventions in history , serving as a cornerstone of primary prevention by averting diseases before they occur . They have led to over 90 % reductions in diseases such as measles , mumps , rubella , pertussis , tetanus and Hemophilus influenzae type b . Vaccinations are responsible for the eradication of smallpox , bringing polio to the brink of eradication , thus cementing their role as the most cost-effective approach to disease prevention .
• Secondary Prevention : Screening programs exemplify secondary prevention by identifying diseases in asymptomatic stages , thus enhancing treatment outcomes , improving survival rates , reducing treatment intensity and costs and ultimately improving patients ’ quality of life . Mammographic screening for breast cancer is a prime example , enabling early detection and timely intervention to significantly improve prognosis .
• Tertiary Prevention : Tertiary prevention focuses on managing established diseases and mitigating their complications . Its goals include restoring health and function , preventing disease recurrence or exacerbation and improving quality of life for individuals with chronic conditions . Cardiac rehabilitation programs illustrate tertiary prevention by helping patients with heart disease recover , reducing the risk of recurrent myocardial infarctions .

Each day , we step into a world where science meets humanity , where skill meets compassion , and where challenges meet opportunities for healing . Ayurveda , one of the world ’ s oldest medical systems , that has its roots in ancient India and dates back over 5,000 years , does precisely that . Derived from the Sanskrit words ayur ( life ) and veda ( knowledge ), Ayurveda translates to the “ Science of Life .” Historical evidence of Ayurvedic texts , terminology and practices can be traced to the middle of the first millennium B . C . E . This traditional system is founded on a holistic and natural approach to physical and mental health , emphasizing the interconnectedness of physical and mental well-being . Central to Ayurvedic philosophy is the incorporation of love , compassion , exercise , laughter , gratitude , meditation and community as vital elements to the healing process .
Exercise as Medicine
Vyayama , or physical activity , has long been regarded as a fundamental practice for maintaining physical and mental health . Ayurvedic texts like the Samhita emphasize exercise as a means to balance the three doshas ( vata , pitta and kapha ) to promote ojas – the essence of vitality and immunity . These texts advocate for moderate and consistent exercise that is tailored to an individual ’ s constitution ( prakriti ) to prevent and manage various chronic conditions .
These principles align closely with modern scientific research that attributes regular physical activity to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases , diabetes , obesity and certain cancers . Engaging in a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week , as recommended by the American Heart Association , reduces allcause mortality by up to 30 %. A large analysis of meta-studies found that exercise can be more effective than standard treatments for certain mental health conditions . Physical activity is 1.5 times more effective at reducing mild-to-moderate symptoms of depression , psychological distress and anxiety compared to medication or cognitive behavior therapy . Exercise interventions showed a median reduction in mental health issues from 42 % to 60 %, compared to 22 % to 37 % for psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy . Exercise stimulates endorphin release , promoting mental well-being and improving sleep quality .
Laughter , the Best Medicine
In today ’ s fast-paced world , where stress and anxiety often prevail , the healing power of laughter shines as a vital and natural remedy . In Ayurveda , the joy of laughter is considered a potent tool for enhancing well-being . Laughter is particularly effective in reducing physical tension and stress .
• Laughter balances all three doshas – vata , pitta and kapha – that are fundamental to Ayurvedic health principles .
• For individuals with excess vata ( associated with anxiety and restlessness ), laughter can be particularly therapeutic .
• An excess of pitta ( associated with irritability and anger ) may find laughter beneficial in tempering their emotional intensity .
• Furthermore , laughter also elevates mood and emotional well-being , fostering a sense of joy and inner peace .
