ISRAEL
Now , I have applied to three different organizations to volunteer in Israel . This will probably be my last medical mission , if accepted ( the last , because I am getting old ).
CONCLUSIONS
If you have never been on a medical mission , you might consider one . It can re-invigorate you , and give new meaning to why you practice whatever field of medicine you are in . You will make new friends all over the world . You will learn the extremes of diseases and conditions . However , the major item is that you will feel very good about what you have done for humanity . It is an honor to serve the people .
Some afterthoughts :
• We accumulate supplies and pack them in duffle bags to transport to the destinations .
• We always include residents in ENT and plastic surgery from UofL and have in the past encouraged the departments to subsidize the resident ’ s expenses .
• For worldwide information on medical missions , one should consult each specialty ’ s organization . Or , better yet , a colleague who is a missioner .
