( continued from page 35 ) things outside of your power to change . Focus on the things you can change , help where you can , and offer support and reassurance for the things you can ’ t change .”
His favorite parts of his work are the teaching aspects , and he really enjoys being able to disseminate to the residents and medical students new research , medications and treatments being developed .
He recently became the GLMS Foundation Treasurer , and while he admits that his financial background was limited , he said the Board of Trustees has helped him find his footing and welcomed him to the Louisville medical community .
“ I said , ‘ Why not ? I ’ ll give it a chance .’ It ’ s always important to stay open to opportunities and look for new ways to grow and learn .”
Since fully immersing himself after finishing training , he really looks to his support network to decompress and de-stress . Much of his focus is on spending time with Ashely and Novella and their extended families .
“ I have to say , I ’ ve really benefitted from having a spouse that ’ s not also in medicine ,” he laughed . “ Not to say that those relationships where both partners are in medicine can ’ t work , but for me , it ’ s nice to be able to step away and leave work at work sometimes .”
Still relatively new to the city , they ’ re exploring all Louisville has to offer , but so far it has been a great fit for their family . Ashley ’ s photography business has taken off – while it was previously more family portraits , senior pictures and weddings , moving to a larger city has allowed her work to shift toward more creative , fashion and editorial styles . It ’ s constantly evolving , Dr . Bilbro said .
Novella will start kindergarten this fall and is currently obsessed with all things princesses , mermaids and unicorns . Dr . Bilbro described her as full of life and energy , and very sweet and thoughtful – which he said she gets from Ashley . Also drawing from mom ’ s influence is her love of crafts and any kind of art project .
When he ’ s not spending time with his two favorite ladies , he ’ s probably watching college sports or playing video games . He and his father got UofL football season tickets for the first time last year , and renewed for this season , hoping to build on the hype from last year . At home , he ’ s a lifelong Nintendo fan , with Mario and Legend of Zelda as his go-tos .
Long-term , he hopes to one day hold a leadership position in a psychiatry residency program . His first few years in academic medicine have confirmed to him that this is where he ’ s meant to be . His personal goals have remained as they have for many years , even before he knew he wanted to pursue medicine : to help people , be a good husband and father , and a good member of our community .
“ At the end of the day , it ’ s about helping people however you can . Recognizing that there ’ s too many problems out there to handle yourself . It ’ s all about reaching out to others , looking for assistance and support , and offering that same support back to others who need it .”
Kathryn Vance is the Communications and Event Coordinator at the Greater Louisville Medical Society .
