2024 GLMS President ’ s Celebration

On Sunday , May 19 , 2024 , we had a wonderful turnout of GLMS members and their families at the Kentucky Derby Museum to celebrate incoming President Dr . Lewis Hargett . We also honored outgoing Board Chair , Dr . Valerie Briones-Pryor and outgoing President , Dr . Patricia Purcell on their excellent year of leadership in their respective positions .

The evening kicked off with cocktail hour , allowing time for friends and colleagues to reconnect while also checking out the museum exhibits . We then opened the doors to the ballroom to enjoy dinner and a showing of “ The Greatest Race ” on their 360 ° screens .
The event also included the awarding of trophies to this year ’ s Richard Spear , MD , Memorial Essay Contest , Dr . Morris Weiss and Dr . Ankur Gupta ( their winning essays are on page 20 in this issue of Louisville Medicine ).
In his presidential address , Dr . Hargett told the story of his journey through medical school , training and getting to where he is today . Ten years ago with a flourishing practice , he found himself called to shift his focus on leading within organized medicine . Several factors influenced this , from evolving employment models , to prior authorization , to scope of practice and so much more . He soon became involved with different organized medicine on the local , state and national levels .
“ Physicians have always been leaders in health care , and we must continue to lead . We have always been strong advocates for our patients , but physicians must be strong advocates for our profession . Each stakeholder has different viewpoints that need to be heard . Physicians need to collaborate as a group to participate in organized medicine and the legislative process ,” he said . “ Physicians can be a powerful voice if we collectively address the issues that affect our profession and our patients .”
Dr . Hargett ’ s platforms for the year are health equity and physician involvement in organized medicine . He finished his presentation quoting an African proverb : “ If you want to go fast , go alone . If you want to go far , go together .”
