For patients who may not be able to be away from home for the two to five days required for an EMU admission , the neurophysiology department is implementing ambulatory EEGs ( aEEG ). The patient will have their EEG leads applied in the neurophysiology lab and then will return home with the aEEG “ suitcase .” This equipment allows similar video and trace monitoring of the patient in their home , although seizure stimulation methods and medication reduction is not part of this process .
The inpatient acute neuroscience unit and EMU are staffed by registered nurses ( RN ) with specialty training in neuroscience nursing . In addition to the expert nursing care , patients in the EMU will be followed by a team of fellowship trained and board-certified epileptologists and neuro-hospitalists .
