I Was Born in a Colony by TIMIR BANERJEE , MD
We have to be willing to invite to our table All those we insulted and thought they were dispensable The tide changes exposing that we thought would remain as the debris And never be known or be visible .
As time moves on The army song reiterates that we can ’ t flee from the loss or the past We must pick up those that were left Caissons keep rolling on .
It is human nature For many To feel satisfied With a sense of superiority Sometimes in an overt fashion Or by subtle display of lack of compassion Or by denying a policy of exclusion .
I was raised in a colony Then I moved to another This made all the difference One I left was conquered The other where people left a kingdom By choice , to exercise religious rights And put up a fight To preserve the integrity of free choice using their might That is my adopted land .
I am forever indebted to this celestial spirit That is in constant demand .
Dr . Banerjee is a clinical professor of neurosurgery at the University of Louisville .
