OPINION dimples ).
My younger partners ’ kids are now college and high school graduates . I feel like singing the “ Simba Cam ” song in their honor , but will restrain myself in the name of everyone ’ s pained expressions .
Then , studying the precious , sleek and shapely 2-year-old fillies , I think of the Old Friends thoroughbred retirement farm in Georgetown , Kentucky . If you have never been – go ! This is how everyone imagines the horse country of Kentucky to be : rolling pastures , green upon green , brown board fence and whinnying horses bellied up to their hay . Michael Blowen , a sportswriter from Boston , founded it and funded it as a retirement paradise for thoroughbreds . Many famous owners and trainers have helped to fund it , most notably Bob Baffert and his family . You tour around on foot or in a little tram , if on foot is not your speed . The guide gives you exact directions on how to approach and pet each horse – Touch Gold likes to race along the fence . Silver Charm gets a certain cut of carrots delivered by standing a certain way and feeding with the appropriate hand . In the graveyards are many Derby winners and other horses I well remember , as the daughter of generations of $ 2 bettors . Afterwards , go to the Irish pub in Georgetown and toast them all .
I feel so lucky , having been blessed with so many eminent medical teachers and colleagues , my incredible partners , my beloved patients . I see them here and there and we generally josh and hug each other – I am so glad to see them thriving , and I mourn the ones who ’ re gone .
That ’ s the rear-view perspective : but up ahead , isn ’ t that a Bay-Breasted Warbler calling ?
Dr . Barry is an internist and Associate Professor of Medicine ( Gratis Faculty ) at the University of Louisville School of Medicine , currently retired and mulling her next moves .
