IN REMEMBRANCE : Jayne Lee Hollander , MD January 26 , 1948-May 17 , 2023
Dr . Jayne Lee Hollander passed away on May 17 , 2023 . She was born in Tell City , Indiana and she grew up in Calhoun , Kentucky . She graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 1974 and completed a residency in pathology and a fellowship in transfusion medicine at Mayo . She was a stellar student , but would tell me that she was more of an overachiever than a true intellect . Anyone who knew her understood that she was stellar in academics and held very high standards for herself .
In 1979 , she relocated to Louisville and assumed the positions of both Director and Medical Director for the American Red Cross Blood Services in Louisville . After seven years she crossed the street , quite literally , and spent the next four years as the Transfusion Medical Director at the University of Louisville , where she formed lasting relationships with the blood bank residents and staff . She left UofL to go into private practice at Floyd Memorial Hospital ,
and in 1994 served as their Chief of Staff .
Jayne had many talents and interests , including golf and bridge . She was an avid reader and had a fierce love for her Doberman Pinschers . She was a true lifelong learner , long before the term was coined . Her fascination with Egyptian history earned her a bachelor ’ s degree in anthropology from UofL in her spare time , during the latter years of her pathology career . What I remember most about Jayne , however , was her talent in teaching pathology residents . She introduced me to the field of transfusion medicine , which changed my career path ; I ’ ve always been very grateful .
Jayne is survived by her husband of 48 years , Gregory Pilotte . She will be missed by all .
